The best place to get garlic breath…or fries I mean.

Garlic Fries at Tamarack Brewing CompanyEvery once in a while it is worth breaking down and having some garlic breath for a while right? The garlic and blue cheese fries at Tamarack are pretty much perfection when you are looking for some fries and garlic to gobble up. They also mix well with a beermosa too. As a nice topper the service has always been great and I am a Tamarack frequenter so the good service isn’t a fluke either – they are consistently wonderful!

If you gobble some up some Tamarack fries let me know what you think – hope you love ’em too!

Win Big at Montana Jacks

A hidden gem on South Ave. This little building houses a great little Montana style casino, and 15 table restaurant. It serves breakfast 7 days a week, and Breakfast until 1pm on Sunday. I highly recommend for the generous portions, friendly wait staff and very fast kitchen. Normally I wouldn’t complain about a kitchen being fast, but a few more minutes to finish the salad before the entree shows up wouldn’t hurt. They have great free quick wifi, use password: montanajacks.

16oz Prime Rib Special

Prime Rib served Friday and Saturday, starting at 4:30pm

Everything I have tried on the menu I have enjoyed, often times their specials are worth trying. The soup rotation is not really a rotation, but its nice to have a place in Montana to get clam chowder during the week, not just Fridays.

The casino has the typical selection for Missoula, with the state limit of $800 payout. Small beer selection, but if your looking for a cheap 2nd date, this place is worth trying.

Hidden Menu Items in Missoula

Often times people wonder, looking at the menu what else they could possibly order. Here are 3 of my favorites in Missoula.

1. The Ice Cream Sundae at Liquid planet

There are those days, when your just not in the mood to walk all the way across the bridge to Big Dipper for a proper Sundae, so stop by Liquid Planet. You have to ask nicely, as some of the recent hires are a little less then friendly, but Choose any of the shake, and ask for them to make it as a Sundae, now it really isn’t a hidden menu item, as it is printed on the menu:

But the results can be amazing, especially if you start to get a little crazy with caramel and nuts. Also you could add a shot of espresso to it, or if you ask nicely maybe 1/2 a banana!

2. Buffalo Shrimp at Old Post

Their shrimp is pretty good, but their Buffalo sauce is one of the best in town, combine the two and you get a meal that pleases the whole mouth.

I was in the Old Post one night, couldn’t make up my mind between buffalo chicken and the Shrimp, so I accidentally asked for buffalo shrimp, the waitress walked away came back and asked what I wanted. Realizing the opportunity to have something amazing, I asked her to send the order to the kitchen, I was not disapointed.

3. Most kitchens will make anything you ask for, if they have the ingredients

Just be nice about it, and understanding if it doesn’t meet your expectations. Things like added fried eggs to hamburger, or cheese fries at places that don’t list them are pretty common. Don’t expect a burger place to make you a pizza. Also expect to pay more for substitutions or alterations. Adding a chicken fried steak to a garbage omelet at the Oxford is expensive, the last time I tried, they had to charge me for a full 2nd meal, since they didn’t have any way to ring up just a Chicken Fried Steak patty. It wasn’t worth it. Other times the hidden menu items can save you a few bucks, like the lunch special at the new top hat. $10 for Salad AND a tapas. That saves you 3 or 4 bucks, compared to ordering them separately.

Do you have any other secret menu items you like? Add them in the comments!

Best Milkshake in Missoula

Having tasted milkshakes / frappes all over Missoula, it is a close tie between 3 locations. Uptown Diner, Big Dipper and Butterfly Herbs. My pick, especially for how much caffeine and coffee flavor is in their frappe, goes to Butterfly Herbs.

Never get it to go, your not going to be getting your true value, always ask for it to stay, as they give you both the Soda fountain cup overflowing with goodness, but they give you the shaker can with everything that wouldn’t fit in the cup.
